Your Answer!

 

So often we find ourselves mired in problems we can not seem to deal with.  Other times we find that day to day doldrums or agitations are too much to bear any longer. We seethe inside with anxiety or tension- feeling a burning in the pit of our stomach as we see people do those things that annoy us or hear those words that just get under our skin.

Sometimes, if we are lucky, we identify that feeling as being something we want to change or do something about.  We make a conscious note that "I don't like this." and from time to time we reinforce that idea by repeating it like a mantra- I don't like this... I don't like this.  And yet- nothing seems to get any better in fact on some levels it seems to get worse.  The anxiety, anger, hurt frustration compound and build.  For some people it is constant and maintains the same level of annoyance for years and years.  For other people it builds manifesting in ulcers or other tension related issues that eat away at them for years physically and psychologically.

But these feelings, and these words we say to ourselves are not the problem in and of themselves, they are manifestations of the problems and more to the point the are VALUABLE signals.  The anxiety, anger, hurt pain are communication from deep without ourselves that says "Hello!  Pay attention to me- there is something here that requires your attention."  Our pain is never without purpose... Our discomfort never without meaning.  We are dynamic systems, amazing combinations of science and spirit with an ability to understand and comprehend BOTH of those things and WE WERE NOT MEANT TO SUFFER.

Whenever one feels discomfort- weather it be in the form of pain, hurt, anger, anxiety, fear- Mindfullness teaches us to take a moment and go inside our minds.  It teaches us to go directly to that discomfort and ask, what is it you are trying to teach me?  What do you want me to know?  Often the answer is basic... "This is wrong. Change it!" knowing what the problem is is usually easy... and solutions are just as easy really.  As a hypnotist, I am constantly reminding people that the solution to being able to stop smoking is..... Don't Smoke.  And the problem is not so much that they like to smoke, the problem is that they like some of the things smoking achieves for them.

If someone annoys you with their tone of voice or other habits... the solution is, don't let it annoy you. The fact that it annoys you is not a problem, it is feedback about what you do or don't like, what you are or are not comfortable with.  It tells you a lot about what you value and what you think.

So- what then can we do when we feel this discomfort begin to rear it's head, what do we do when we need to get OUT of that cyclic thinking trap to give us a moment of leverage to make some of these changes?  SEEK BEAUTY!

Start a new habit... learn it now... of every time you feel discomfort, stop- and say the words "Seek Beauty." silently to yourself... then do it!  Seek Beauty- Look around and find SOMETHING that is beautiful- it resets your mind.  Beauty can be found in all things. It might be looking at a woven basked and imagining the beauty of the person who threaded the reeds through each other  using time honored traditions passed down from generation to generation.

You might look at the face of the person who is being angry or cold to you and see beauty in their strength.  See Beauty in their ability to shrug things off- for in the right place that IS a wondrous skill.

Seeking beauty requires a discipline, and an ability to see beyond your own petty fears, worries and hurts- and as you begin to try this technique out you will find an amazing thing.  When you stop in the middle of a self draining thought pattern and take a moment to reset your brain by seeking something of beauty, the tightness of the hold of the symptoms of that tension release.  It gives you a moment of leverage to take your mind in a better direction.  It allows you to follow the first rule of hypnotic goal setting... if you don't like what you are doing- DO SOMETHING ELSE.

And so,  as we ring in this new year (by one calendar at least) make a list of all those things you have been doing and unhappy about... STOP, seek some beauty in your life - something simple or dynamic- and then decide to DO something else.
